ABOUT:

Het werk van Astrid Leijssen bestaat uit sculpturen en collages.
Ze onderzoekt de eigenschappen en mogelijkheden van voornamelijk industriële materialen. Door deze te vervormen, te snijden, te kleuren en opnieuw samen te stellen, creëert ze  sculpturen. Eventuele breuklijnen en beschadigingen blijven zichtbaar, waarbij zachte kleuren de strengheid van het materiaal ondermijnen. De hardheid en technische weerstand van het gebruikte materiaal staan in een voortdurende dialoog met een zichtbare zachtheid en soms fragiliteit. Dit geeft de beleving iets fysieks en poëtisch, waardoor een nieuwe realiteit ontstaat. 

Naast de sculpturen maakt ze collages, opgebouwd uit fotografie van haar eigen werk.
Deze beelden ontstaan uit uitgeknipte fragmenten die ze digitaal bewerkt, opnieuw componeert of met kleurpotlood aanvult, maar soms ook uit een enkele foto of een nieuw gefotografeerd object. De collages functioneren als autonome beelden met een eigen betekenis, die voortbouwen op de sculpturen en een dialoog met hen aangaan. Zo ontstaat samen een nieuwe betekenislaag.

 

The work of Astrid Leijssen consists of sculptures and collages. She investigates the properties and possibilities of primarily industrial materials. By deforming, cutting, coloring, and reassembling them, she creates sculptural forms. Any fractures and traces of damage remain visible, while soft colors undermine the material’s inherent rigidity. The hardness and technical resistance of the materials are in constant dialogue with a visible softness and, at times, fragility. This gives the experience something physical and poetic, creating a new reality.

Alongside her sculptures, she creates collages composed of photographs of her own work. These images emerge from cut-out fragments that she digitally edits, recomposes, or enhances with colored pencil, but sometimes also from a single photograph or a newly photographed object. The collages function as autonomous images with their own meaning, building upon the sculptures and entering into dialogue with them. Together, they generate a new layer of meaning.
